Hello Friends! I'm very excited to share my design adventures with you and to help encourage the integration of design into your life. I hope to leave homes filled with as much personality and spunk as their inhabitants. -Lauren
About Dorsey
I am an 8th grade Physical Science teacher for an urban school district near Columbus, Ohio. I previously taught high school Chemistry. I love science and hope that my students can see this and enjoy their daily dose of science with me. I am married to a very talented and creative husband who is supportive even when I bring home a can of purple paint for a double story wall in the great room. We share joint-custody of a 9 pound schnoodle named June. She is my forever puppy, even at 11 years of age.
So how do we get from chemistry to design? Well my friends, I have always loved art in all forms. My dream career has always been to be an interior designer, but like many of us I was unsure that I would be able to support myself while living off my love. I turned to my academic strengths as I looked for a career path. At the University of Toledo I enrolled in the Pharmacy program but found that after a year in the program that it was not right for me. I needed more autonomy to use my creative juices. Already deep into my Chemical and Biologic studies I decided to stay the course and build upon those to become a teacher. Teaching is an art. I enjoy sculpting dry science content into captivating lessons.
I am 4 years into my teaching career and the itch to try for my dream has returned. I am using my house as ground zero to try out design ideas that have been pent up in my head since watching my first episode of Trading Spaces on HGTV back in 1998. On a side note, I believe I may have a full fledged degree in Interior Design if you add up all the hours of HGTV I have watched from 5th grade on. I am also blessed to have amazing friends that allow me to to leave a Dorsey Designed room or two in their homes.
